    ISU was founded in 1983 AD (1361 solar AH; 1402 Islamic lunar AH) in Tehran. The university's initial mission was to merge Islamic Studies with Humanities--a viewpoint rooted in the founders’ recognized perception of the split between Howza (Islamic Seminary Schools) and universities in pre-revolution era.
     
    The main source of inspiration was the preaching and guidance of Imam Khomeini who, time and again, insisted on the mischievous plot of the domineering Western powers to create a chasm between the two influential institutions.

    Ayatollah Mahdavi-Kani , a faithful disciple of Imam Khomeini, and a freedom fighter whose ideas and action had brought him persecution, illegal imprisonment, torture and exile during the reign of the Pahlavi regime, was appointed as the president of ISU, thus initiating the preliminary steps towards accomplishing the goal, together with employing the routine ethical and education principles of Howzas (Islamic Seminaries).

    In such a viable system, students take courses in Islamic studies in tune with their specialties in humanities. ISU has separate campuses, one for female and one for male students since many Iranian families are willing to send their sons and daughters to universities with a religious identity, a principle underpinned by ISU's senate and executive board seeking to provide a healthy environment as the basis of a scientific institution.     In its next endeavor, ISU has undertaken research on Islam and Humanities. The task started a few years after its establishment and still continues.​
     
    ISU seeks to train scholars with integrity, credibility, and deep expertise in both Islamic studies and humanities merging conventional and modern features. This, certainly, requires long-term commitment and ISU has devoted a great deal to this end.
